"The present book depicts critical analysis of the socio-cultural phenomena, in which Indian women have grown and they are growing. At this juncture, when there is stress from all the quarters on the empowerment of women, the present volume will help the readers to systematize their ideas and concerns for upliftment of women-folk. In India also, alike many European countries, ‘women studies’ are gathering momentum at various levels and on variety of themes particularly in the socio-cultural perspectives. The subject has been given the status of independent discipline in some European Universities, whereas in India it is yet to start. The 1999 Survey on the role of women in development testifies the testimony that in recent years the Indian women have taken very violent strides in the field of employment, which has left a deep impact on the socio-cultural scenario of the land, and also affected the traditional value-system adversely. This view-point has been taken into account particularly while analysing the socio-cultural perspectives of Indian women. This book will contribute to the awakening of Indian women by making them realize—what they had been, what they are; and what they can become. Moreover, the erudition and lucid style of the prolific author have made the book readable for one and all, who are interested in the subject of women and their socio-cultural status through various phases of Indian history."
