Indrana: The Daughter of Zeus is a lyrical epic on the theme of freedom and narrates the story of the birth of Indrana, the daughter of Zeus, an old man accompanied by Sapphomer, a carefree androgynous mystic. Indrana is born to defeat the attackers who come to colonize the island inhabited by Zeus and Sapphomer. However, after the passing of the threat to their independence, Zeus himself becomes despotic and begins to oppress the people he now colonizes. Indrana is later revealed to be a manifestation of the Great Mother, and not just the daughter of a man. She is hence to be respected by Zeus. She strikes Zeus with her spear when Zeus’s despotism reaches its zenith and he throws Sapphomer in prison. The wound created by Indrana’s spear becomes a source of wisdom for Zeus and he begins to appreciate the necessity of freedom for all – which is the source of all beauty and goodness.
