The term library information system in its present form is defined to include a wide array of solutions that previously might have been considered separate industries with distinctly different marketplaces. This includes the integrated library system marketplace and the online database industry. As the LIS domain has developed and evolved, numerous terms have been used to describe these efforts to incorporate technological solutions that improve access to recorded knowledge. These roots predate the actual development of the digital computer, going all the way back to the punch cards used in early circulation control systems.
