This book is the outcome of a constant study of manuscriptology conducted by the author for overadecade. Here an attempt has been made to bring together all informations pertaining to the science of textual criticism so far as Sanskrit is concerned. Topics like the antiquity of writing in India, the materials used for writing purposes, collection, preservation and cataloguing of manuscripts, critical editing of the manuscripts, etc., are dealt with in detail. The book covers two aspects of manuscriptology: (i) that relates to manuscripts externally, i.e., the nature and form of manuscripts, material, script, the antiquity, cataloguing and presentation and (ii) that relates to manuscripts internally, i.e., the method of critically editing a text. An exhaustive list of Manuscript Libraries in India and outside and a comprehensive list of glossary of technical terms: Sanskrit-English and English-English are appended to this book. An exhaustive bibliography is also given for the reference of readers -and researchers. Further, exercises for learning scripts, that are mostly employed in Sanskrit manuscripts, have been carefully designed keeping the learners in view and appended to this volume. This volume is one of the rare contributions to the Science of Manuscriptology and Indian textual criticism, which will be of a high significance to beginners and scholars in the field.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR R S Shivaganesha Murthy
R.S. Shivaganesha Murthy (B. 1937, d. 1992) was Professor and Head of the Department of Studies in Sanskrit, University of Mysore and also Director, Oriental Research Institute, University of Mysore, Mysore. Dr. Shivaganesha Murthy did his B.D. (Hons.) degree in Sanskrit from the University of Mysore in 1957 securing a First Class and First Rank with gold medals. He did his M.A. degree from the same University in 1958 securing a First Class and soon after was the recipient of UGC fellowship during 1959-67-1. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree by the University of Mysore for his thesis on A Study of the Important Brahmanas. He served the University of Mysore since 1964 in various capacities. He worked as a coordinator in the Dictionary of Alankara-sastra project before and even after entering the teaching profession. He taught both undergraduates and postgraduates in the Department of Sanskrit and successfully guided several students for the Ph.D. degree. He also served as a member of various academic bodies and social organizations. Dr. Murthy specialized in the areas of Manuscriptology, Veda, Alankara and Darshana. He has a number of publications to his credit; mention may be made of A Study of the Important Brahmanas, Santavilasa (Ed.), Nayamanjari Chandamsi (Ed.), Sandhyopasana, etc. He also has to his credit, more than fifty research papers. He was conferred the title of Vidyavacaspati by the Sri Vedantadesika Vicara Sabha, Mysore, in 1991.
