Issues in Pakistan’s Economy was first published in 1999, and became the standard text for students and researchers on Pakistan’s economy, both in Pakistan and at universities, abroad. This book is the main text for post-graduate courses on south Asia’s development, economic history and its political economy. For researchers on Pakistan’s economy, it is the key source for reference, and covers a huge and diverse array of data, literature reviews, commentary and analysis. The second edition has been expanded, updated and revised. The presentation of this edition is similar to the first with boxed text, appendices, chapter summaries and suggested further readings. Contemporary, new, and emerging issues have now been discussed and analyzed. Significantly, three new chapters have been added on Poverty in Pakistan, one of Pakistan’s most pressing problems on the political aspect of economic and trade relations between India and Pakistan, and on macroeconomic developments since 1998. Along with this, there are substantive new additions on Globalization, WTO, Pakistan’s new Local District Government system and a re-evaluation of the Political Economy of the Pakistani State. While meant for university students, Issues in Pakistan’s Economy is also addressed to a general readership. Journalists, development sector actors, those who work with or for donors or NGOs, and the general reader, will find much of value in the book. Serious scholars on Pakistan’s economy, and its state and society, will find the book indispensable for their research since it contain discussion, data and critical analysis on almost every important topic related to Pakistan’s Political economy.
