The Government of India has declared the year 2001 as the year of women empowerment. A lot has been done and many initiatives are being taken in this regard at national and international levels. Efforts have been made by the Government as well as Non-Governmental Agencies for the empowerment of women and raising their status in the society. Coinciding with these efforts, this volume is highlighting the different issues and problems concerning the Indian women. Issues of gender bias, empowerment, status of empowerment, female labour forces, political participation, anti-trafficking, Tribal Panchayats, Constitutional Panchayats, human rights, migration, health etc. have been the major considerations of this volume. Thus, the volume covers a wide range of topics on women empowerment. This volume is a useful collection of documents for researchers, professional NGOs, activists and the government. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bhola Nath Ghosh
Bhola Nath Ghosh obtained MA in Sociology and Ph.D. degree on "Rural Leadership and Development: A Study of the Changing Pattern, its Consequences in West Bengal". He visited different universities in United Kingdom and completed a course on Monitoring and Evaluation in Project in the year 1993 at Norwich University in England. He presented many research papers in National and International Seminars/Conferences. Several papers have been published in different Journals of National, International and edited books. He completed two projects independently and worked as an associate member in an international project and presently he is a faculty member of Sociological Research Unit in Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Utpal Kumar De
Dr. Utpal Kumar De (b. 1968) has completed M.Sc. and M. Phil. in Economics from the University of Burdwan. He also acquired Ph.D. in economics from the university of Burdwan. Formerly, a Lecturer in Analytical and applied Economics at Tripura University, Tripura, currently Dr. De is a Reader in Economics at North-Easter Hill University, Shillong, Meghaalaya. His research interests are in Agricultural Economics, Rural Development and Environmental and Resource Economics. Dr. De has participated in several national and international seminars and conferences. He has contributed more than a dozen of articles in several reputed journals and also completed a number of research projects in agricultural economics. However, it is his maiden venture.
