Jatropha is a valuable multi-purpose crop to alleviate soil degradation, desertification and deforestation, which can be used for bio-energy to replace petro-diesel, for soap production and climatic protection, and hence deserves specific attention. The Planning Commission of India has nominated it as an ideal plant for biodiesel. Jatropha until recently was not cultivated as a domesticated crop. But the scenario is changing. The potential of Jatropha is being researched and developed in developing countries as Zambia, Mali, India, China and the Phillipines. Jatropha is grown in many Asian countries. It is also popular in Europe and US as a green product helping to reduce global warming.

Lots of researches are going on in the field of Jatropha. Looking into all these fact, an effort has been made to compile all the research results on Jatropha curcas in this book. The book comprises of 10 chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the international popularity of Jatropha as a biofuel plant. Chapter 2 discusses the progress of plantation and biofuel development in India. Chapter 3 describes the facts about the plant Jatropha curcas as a multipurpose plant. Chapter 4 elucidates the therapeutic usage and ethnomedicinal properties of the miracle plant Jatropha curcas. Chapter 5 peeps into the potential of Jatropha as an animal feed. The various mode of propagation of this plant has been described in chapter 6. Jatropha has the unique capability to survive in marginal soil. Chapter 7 tries to give an overview of Jatropha as a stress resistant plant with sufficient experimental documentation. Omics intervention to understand the potentiality of Jatropha has been the main aim of Chapter 8. We discuss in this chapter the various players of omics in relation to the work done on Jatropha. Chapter 9 gives an overview of the plant as a potential energy crop and in the last enzymatic production of biodiesel from Jatropha oil is given in chapter 10. This book will be highly beneficial to all the researchers, students and teachers in the field of plant biotechnology, energy resources, biofuels and agriculture.
