Justice P.N. Bhagwati (later C.J.) is one of those activist judges who interpreted the fundamental rights so liberally which brought as many rights, within the definition of personal liberty, as possible at that time and started a new era of liberalism. He liberalised standing pattern by initiating public interest litigation which was the most outstanding work. It was Justice Bhagwati who started giving free legal aid to the poor litigants and made it a state duty to provide free legal aid. It was Justice Bhagwati, who started reading article 21 in conjunction with articles 14, 19 and 22, so related these fundamental rights with each other. If one of the right is isolated then it can be tested on the touchstone of other fundamental rights also. It was Justice Bhagwati who was pained by lethargic justice system and emphasized the speedy justice. He was so liberal who provided rights to the arrested persons also. The present book examines the cases relating to fundamental rights and directive principles, decided by Justice Bhagwati. This work is based on the judgments of Justice Bhagwati, the cases which came before him while he was a judge and later Chief Justice of Supreme Court. Also discussed are latest cases based on the judgments of Justice Bhagwati. Each case has been discussed in detail.
