Kailash: Impressions and Expressions is Dr. Haridas’s first book and is an adventure documentation written for an advanced amateur trekker. The adventure book is about his trekking experiences in the Kailash-Manasarovar region, along the Lhasa-Karakoram highway in Tibet’s Ali Province. This region is extremely rich in mythology, history, geology and geography. Historian call it the Jerusalem of the East, for it is the cradle of the Buddhist, Tibetan and Hindu civilizations. Lord Kubera’s ‘Alkapuri’ is located here, the Indus, the Brahmaputra and the Sutlej originate here, the holy Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are situated here. Ravana from Lanka propitiated Lord Shiva here and the extremely enticing Rakshas Tal, which is said to be the Gateway to Pataal lies a few kilometers west of Manasarovar. General Zorawar Singh accomplished much fame here during the time of Maharaja Gulab Singh when the Great Punjab was about half the size of present-day India and Professor Sven Hedin, with Royal Orders from Sweden, did pioneering geophysical research in this region as early as 1907, and his epoch making work Trans Himalaya (also published by Gyan) remains an unparalleled feat in geophysical documentation even today. Dr. Salim Ali, under the auspices of the Bombay Natural History Society visited the area in 1946 and wrote a scientific paper on the fauna of the region. The advent of Christianity can be traced back to 1626 and perhaps the oldest church in this part of the world is at Chhabrang village, built by Jesuit Antonio de Andrade near the source of the Sutlej, west of Rakshas Tal. Some amount of gold is also mined in the area which is strategically and militarily a sensitive zone, most of which is above an altitude of 15,000 feet above sea level. The heady opiate of adventure and challenge which emerge after an assimilation of some of these factors has been extremely overpowering and has been the motivating factor behind Dr. Haridas’ book. Thirty-eight beautiful colour photographs taken using extremely specialized mirror zoom lenses and radiation filters serve to enhance the beauty of this comprehensive work and form the basis of an advanced geological research on the region that currently occupies Dr. Haridas’ professional interests.
