Sexual abuse of children is a matter of grave concern. Trafficking of children has national and international dimensions. Of late, the problem of children in prostitution has assumed serious proportions. Identification and enumeration of factors conducive to child prostitution is in a way difficult because it has roots deep in the fabric of society. Ratification of the convention of the rights of the child in 1992 by India signifies the nation’s commitment to the well-being of the children. Creating safe, secure and harmonious environment for children in society is the onerous task of the family, the community, the society and the government. It cannot be denied that for effective implementation of any social legislation, public support is necessary. In the publication, Dr. (Mrs.) Giri has dealt with almost all issues relevant to child prostitution. These include prevention, rescue and rehabilitation, awareness and social mobilization, health care, education, housing and civic amenities, economic empowerment, legal reforms, law enforcement, trafficking, institutional machinery, methodology and human rights issues. The remedies suggested by the author are pragmatic and borne out of critical analysis of the situation. It is a timely publication which will be great use to all those concerned with tackling the menace.
