Lamayuru monastery is situated in between Bodhkharbu and Kha-la-che along the Leh Srinagar road, on a steepy rock mountain. Even before the advent of Buddhsim, it was a well established (Bon) shrine. The Monastery had attained popular regardful attention throughout Ladakh, In the eleventh century A.D. Naropa came here and meditated in a cave, whose identity is preserved in New Dukhang of the Monastery. Soon after, Rinchen-bzang-po came here and established five Lha-Khangs and many chortens, some of which still exist in ruined conditions. In later days, the monastery was influenced by different sects of the religious movements in Tibet. In the 16th century A.D. it became the centre of Drigung-Kargyud-Ipa order and taken under the control of Phyang monastery of Ladakh. Now working dependent. It has old and new Lha-khangs and Buddhist meditation centre. The walls of the Lha-Khangs are decorated with paintings. Amongst other images, standing out is a statue of Avalokitesvara with eleven heads, one thousand hands, and an eye in the palm of each hand, principal hands in Varuda mudra. The monastery is known by names also ; Yung Drung, Yong – Drung – Thar – pa – Lingo. This book will be of immense use particularly for Buddhist researches and tourists.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Prem Singh Jina

Dr. Prem Singh Jina a, Ph.D. in Economics, from Kumaum University, Nainital, he has also done short-term courses in Animal Husbandry, Agronomy, Horticulture and Mushroom Production from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. Dr. Jina started his professional career at the Central Buddhist Studies, Leh, Ladakh in 1981, as a Lecturer in Economics. HE has written several book on Ladakh Himalaya and has presented 13 papers at International and 20 papers at National Conferences. More than 40 radio talks by him on different aspects of Ladakh have also been broadcast. He was made the Indian Council of Historical Research Fellow in 1996-97. The American Biographical Institute, USA, selected him for the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership, and nominated him for the award of ‘Man of the Year-1998’. Presently, he is Professor at Central Institute of Buddhist Studies Leh, Ladakh.
