This is a path-breaking work in a field which is attracting renewed interest all over the world, given the growing need for sustainable land utilisation. Since land is still the most precious source of livelihood in the area studied in this work, namely South Asia, the book carries an added importance for the inhabitants of the region. Through a comparative framework of analysis, this study attempts to delineate similarities and differences in land management practices among different parts of South Asia, determine their reasons and bring out the "best practices" in the various fields of land management, so that these may be adopted elsewhere in the region. The book is a product of over two years of rigorous fieldwork in various parts of South Asia. It is expected to become an essential reference guide to scholars, academics and officials concerned with land management.
