A language is a system used to facilitate communication among people. It is easy to define language in vague terms as ‘there is a magic in the spoken word’, ‘Language is one of the greatest glories of man’. But to define a language with precision is far less easy than to define acid or any other chemical term. All the numerous definitions of language given by various thinkers bring out different aspects of language and supplement one another in making us understand all the facts of language. A language by which we mean a spoken language may be defined as "a system of arbitrary vocal symbols by means of which human beings communicate and co-operate with one-another’. Phonology is the organization of sounds into patterns. In order to fulfil the communicative functions, languages organize their material, the vocal noises, into recurrent bits and pieces arranged in sound patterns. It is the study of this formal organization of languages which is known as phonology.
