Cooperative legislation has been receiving attention of the government at various points of time with the basic objective of involving people at the grassroot level so as to help them in availing the facilities provided by the cooperatives. The societies formed under the cooperative legislation acquire legal status and are permitted to raise funds and carry on business in a corporate character. The raising numerical strength of cooperative institutions, the large number of sectors in which they are functioning, their extended territorial and membership coverage, their higher command over financial resources and expanded volume and variety of their operations call for a careful and better understanding of the Cooperative Societies Act and also of "Related Laws" applicable in their working and dealings. The working of a cooperative society and the application of the special law enacted for the purpose, are to a considerable extent, dependent upon the provisions of several other laws. A cooperator working in cooperative institutions, therefore, should not only have knowledge of the Cooperative Societies Act, but also, the knowledge of related laws which are applicable to cooperative institutions.
