This book is the fourteenth volume in the “Library in India Series” covering Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand.
Under Preliminaries a brief over-view of the states with languages and literatures in vogue; A fairly comprehensive account of the history of libraries from the early period to date is given.
A perspective of the libraries and library development in these states is given as to the chronological development. Efforts for library legislation and full-texts of library acts was given under each state.
Detailed account of Public libraries, Manuscript libraries; Academic libraries; Research and Special libraries was given. Ancillary subjects like education for librarianship, professional organization, library professionals, etc., were also comprehended. Fringe areas like archives, conservation of documents, reference sources, chronology of events, etc. are also elaborated.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR P S G Kumar
Dr P S G Kumar is a prolific writer in the field of library and information science. He wrote about 70 books and 142 papers which include Indian Library Chronology (2 editions); Indian Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science (23 volumes); Kumar’s Curriculum Series (16 volumes); and Library in India Series (10 volumes); etc. He has a distinguished first class career from BSc (Ag) to MLibSc. He earned doctorate from Gulbarga University. He was associated and also headed several national and international bodies like Indian Library Association (ILA); Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) for 12 years; Joint Council of Library Association in India (JOCLAI); Library Association of SAARC countries (LASAARC) (one term of two Years); Good Offices Committee (GOC); Vidarbha Academic Library Association (VALA)n for 4 years; and Council Member of IASLIC for two terms; etc. Friends, students and admirers instituted Dr P S G Kumar Oration on Library and Information Science (with RTM Nagpur University); Dr P S G Kumar Life-Time Achievement Award (with ILA); and Dr P S G Kumar Library Foundation at Nagpur which is sponsoring Mahiti Yug (Information Age), a quarterly journal in Marathi; and Information Age in English.
