The book focuses exclusively on female migration and seeks to dispel some of the misconceptions Surrounding Women’s Mobility Behaviour. After Delineating The Broad Patterns Of Female Migration As distinct from those of men, the book examines women’s proclivity for migration in terms of their stage in the life cycle. The stages considered relevant are pre-marital, neo-marital, post neo-marital and dissolved marriage phases. The book is based on a study of the census data, besides migration histories of women, collected through a sample survey in Tamil Nadu. A significant finding of the study is that unlike men whose mobility is determined largely by economic forces, a woman’s mobility is influenced by the interplay of economic, social and cultural factors. Lastly a typology of female migration capturing some of its salient features is developed.
