Local Self-Government and Municipal Administration

In the modern world, democracy has come to stay and it has been accepted that democratic form of government is the best instrument of governing a society. There are variations in the forms of democracy, but the general philosophy is that there should be maximum involvement of people in the decision making processes. While as at the provincial and national level, elections are held at regular intervals to know the views of the people about the policies and performance of a particular party government, it is highly necessary and useful to involve people in the local problems of the society. Local self governments in the form of municipalities and district councils have been working since long in India. In this book the origin and functioning of local self governments in India has been identified and their problems have been discussed.
