Lok Adalat as a part of the strategy for legal aid, introduced in the year 1985 in Rajasthan is a forum, movement and ideology which brings cheap and speedier justice to the door steps of a common man. Presently it is gaining popularity in the matter of solving a number of disputes. This study deals with organisation and functioning of Lok Adalats. The concepts, objectives, historical evolution, organisational process of the Lok Adalat are discussed here. People’s attitudes and perceptions of Lok Adalat are also highlighted. The problems, observations and suggestions for improvement of the Lok Adalat system have been discussed by the author in a good manner. The volume will be of special interest to the readers drawn for judiciary, legal profession, academics, social workers etc. and of general interest to the masses. Also, this is the first empirical work devoted to organisation and working of Lok Adalat system in Rajasthan. It examines the system from viewpoints of various categories of people, i.e., judicial, non-judicial, legal, litigants, social workers, common masses, etc.
