This book examines the coming of the refugees in West Bengal in the year 1947 and their efforts to make a space for themselves in their new found homeland, till the year 1955. The book makes a modest effort to treat their massive problem in its different layers, involving the policy of the government, the role of the opposition, the experiences and adjustment effort of the refugees outside the official discourse, their memory, nostalgia and hope for a better future. At the same time the impact of their problem on the cultural discourses of West Bengal, the literature and the films has also been touched. This book may contribute towards a more human under-sting of man-made catastrophe which reshaped the destiny of millions.
