The book is a detailed study of the traditional brick industry in India and its management. It examines the present status of traditional brick units—as against large-scale modern chamber brick units—which supply the needs of the construction sector and the major problems faced by them especially as they are not governed by the policies, rules and regulations of the government. Concentrating on the Madurai district, it focuses on the science of bricks covering physical and chemical properties of bricks, the socio-economic status of traditional brick unit entrepreneurs and location of the brick units. It analyses their scale of production, throwing light on concerns for the units relating to dearth of raw materials and capital, lack of science and technology and research backing, and damage by natural calamities that cause huge loss to entrepreneurs.
