The present work is an exhaustive study of the folk designs made on floor and walls by women of Rajasthan folk. It will be of interest to artists, art historians, critics, designers and decorators in the field of textiles, jwellery, interior architecture and furniture. The book deals with the traditions of Mandana related to different castes and regions as well as different festivals, celebrations and auspicious occasions. A detailed analysis of the origin and development of folk motifs has been made keeping in view their use, cultural importance and application in other fields. The study reveals that the folk traditions of decorating the surroundings and objects of use is an innate desire of man and is transmitted from one generation to other by way of performance and training. It is prevalent throughout India is some form or other.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Neelima Vashishtha
Dr. Neelima Vashishtha is M.A. in Sanskrit and also Drawing and Painting. She worked as a Tagore Fellow on Sculptural Traditions of Rajasthan and obtained her Ph. D. on this subject from the University of Rajasthan , Jaipur. She served as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur.Dr. Vashishtha has specialized in Art History and Aesthetics and has chosen Rajasthan as a part of her wider studies on Indian art history. She worked on Representation of Ramayana Themes in Vishal Arts of Rajasthan, as Senior Research fellow, ICHR, New Delhi, and also on Tradition and Modernity in Indian Arts during the Twentieth Century, as fellow, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. She five publications to her credit. Her work entitled Sculptural Traditions of Rajasthan ca. 800-1000 AD, has been acclaimed in the academic circles. Besides, she has published a large number of research papers on art history and has also participated in several national and international seminars.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR V.N. Saxena
Shri Virendra Narayan Saxena (b. 1934) is an eminent artist and recipient of prestigious Avanindra Nath Tagore Award, 1958 from Visvabharati Shantiniketan. As a true artist and ideal teacher of art to the core of his heart, he has remained committed to the cause of Indian Art in its spirit and expression which he had imbibed from his teachers at the Kalabhavan of Visvabharati University, Shantiniketan. He joined the Department of Drawing and Painting of Maharani’s College and retired as Dean, Head and Coordinator of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur. He has participated in One-Man shows held in AIFACS, New Delhi 1970, 1971, Banasthali Vidyapeeth 1973, 1974 and Annual Exhibitions of Rajasthan Lalit Kala Akademi from 1972 to 1978. Besides, he has organised regular workshops and camps of Fresco and Landscape painting and has also directed plays and stage decoration. The drawings of this book are a result of his keen interest in the preservation of traditional arts and folk forms and indicate his keen observation and sensitive attitude towards artistic activity.
