The ‘Manual on Rock Mechanics’, in this revised version, contains nineteen chapters, covering basic concepts of Rock Mechanics, Field and Laboratory Tests on Rock Mass and Rock Specimen, Geophysical Investigations, Interpretation of test data and their application to various problems of Foundation of Dams, Tunnelling, etc. A new chapter on Shotcreting has also been included. Hence, though titled as ‘Manual on Rock Mechanics’, it is expected to serve as a Treatise on Rock Mechanics.
It is hoped that this Manual fulfills not only the long-felt need of practicing engineers, but provides the necessary information to several state research stations etc., presently engaged in building up facilities in Rock Mechanics.
A Manual of this type, obviously calling for intense and dedicated efforts, could not have been possible, but for the combined involvement of many experts.
