MARC 21, ISO 2709 communication format is the name of harmonized CAN/MARC and USMARC format, it is designed to facilitate the exchange of bibliographic and related information. It is an International exchange format, and supports the revised Anglo American Cataloguing rules (AACR-II, 2 ed, 2002 revision). In this format a proper place is provided for each of the bibliographic information, if a bibliographic record has been marked correctly and saved in a computer data file, computer programs can then be written to search for an retrieve certain types of information within a specific fields, and also to display lists of items meeting the search criteria. ABOUT THE AUTHOR R.S. Aswal

R.S. Aswal is working as Assistant Manager (Lib. & Information Services) for last five years in VTLS Software Private Limited. Presently he is handling a major project of cataloging of National Library of India, Kolkata and Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore. Prior to this he has worked for UP State Cement Corporation Ltd. He has written following three books: CDS/ISIS for Windows: a handbook for Librarians, Information Networks in India, MARC21: Cataloging format for 21 Century. Next title "Library automation for 21st Century" is under process and expected to come on the market at the end of the June 2005. He is also associated with the teaching programmes of two universities.
