This book is a collection of papers presented at the national seminar on “Marginal Existence: New Trends in Literature†organized by the Department of English, Kumaun Unviersity, Nainital. The articles collected here represent a wide range of topics, from the purely theoretical, which outline and define the concept, to the thematically specific, such as the marginalization of the elderly. From Marlow to Morrison, and Gaikwad to Gandhi and Sri Aurobindo, the authors and texts discussed, spanning a period of five centuries, include both major and minor voices from India, British, and American literatures. The issues range from known discriminations based on race, caste, class and gender to emerging societal patterns, relating to groups hitherto neglected, such as the dehumanization of criminals, six workers and eunuchs. From eminent professors to little-known research scholars coming from the four corners of the country-Uttaranchal, Tamilnadu, Gujarat and Bengal-the contributors truly represent a pan-Indian community of English teachers.
