Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) was instantly rejected by her contemporaries who could at best recognize the work simply as a ‘crude Gothic novel’. Santwana Haldar teaches English at F.M. (Autonomous) College, Balasore. She is an erudite scholar and perceptive critic of fiction. She is widely published, especially in the area of the new literatures. Her articles on V.S. Naipaul, Saiman Rushdie, Chinua Achebe and Jhumpa Lahiri have been published recently, in reputed journals.
