ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.C. Mandhar
"Suresh Chander Mandhar passed his B.Sc. in Agricultural Engineering from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in 1972 and M.Tech in Design Engineering with Distinction from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1975. He started his carrier during 1974 at Small Industry Extension Training Institute in Hyderabad and served as Assistant Engineer in Farm Machinery Testing Centre, Department of Farm Power and Machinery, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana from 1975-1980. He tested seed cum fertilizer drills, potato planters, sprayers, potato harvesters and threshers for wheat and paddy. He also surveyed the manufacturing technologies of farm machinery in Punjab during this period. He was also teaching Farm Power and Machinery and Mechanical Engineering Courses.
He was appointed Scientist (S-2) Farm Machinery and Power at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore during 1980 and he served Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR), Banglore for about 33 years and retired as Principal Scientist and Head, Section of Agricultural Engineering. He believed in end to end mechanization of horticultural crops. To attain these he had developed vegetable nursery raising machinery and transplanter for raised bed cultivation of vegetable crops. He also developed seed drill for sowing onion under rainfed cultivation and weeder for raised bed cultivated crops.
The harvesters for mango, sapota, guava and lime have been developed. For mechanisation of mango pickle industry the peeler, slicer and cube cutter has been developed. For mechanization of garlic pickle industry the bulb breaker and garlic peeler has been developed. He also planned and developed the complete campus of Indian Institute Horticultural Research, Bangalore. The rain water harvesting system, irrigation system and drainage systems were developed.
