The book is an illustrated compendium of Medicinal Plants of Nagaland, a pre-dominantly Tribal State of India. It is a part of North Eastern Region of the Country, bestowed with a rich and interesting floral diversity which, holds an array of medicinal and aromatic plants. A number of plants of high therapeutic value have been reported which have proven values in different medicinal systems. This book is a systematic documentation of existing knowledge, grey literature and researched efforts on the subject matter. The strength of the book lies in its simplicity and clarity of presentation without loosing sight of other important information which interest everyone. Authenticated colour photographs of medicinal plants supported by short and informative description given in the book will greatly help in conservation and augmentation of resources. The indigenous tribal society has its own methods of treatment and health care acquired through traditional knowledge. Many of the locally occurring plants are very effectively used for this purpose. Some of these, hold promise to yield panacea in the future. The details given in this regard will be very useful for ethno-pharmacological studies in the area. ABOUT THE AUTHOR G D Sharma
Professor G.D. Sharma is a Mycorrhizologists/Microbial Ecologist, completed his doctorate from North Eastern Hill University, Shillong (Meghalaya). Professor Sharma is currently Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, a central University in North Eastern India. Before moving to the Nagaland Univesity he has served North Eastern Hill University in the capacity of a Faculty member (Reader & Lecturer) of Botany Department and Assam University, Silchar in the capacity of Professor/Head, Department of Life Science and Dean School of Life Science. He has successfully completed about 13 R&D projects funded by a number of agencies (CSIR, ICAR, DAE, UGC, DOEn, DST, ICFRE, Indo-Rrench Collaboration). He has guided about 15 students for their Ph.D. degrees. Professor Sharma has about twenty-seven years of teaching and research experience. He has published 130 research papers in journals of national and international repute. He is recipient of prestigious fellowship of Royal Society, London, UK and INSA, India. He has visited several countries (USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand) for various academic causes. His biography has been published in the Dictionary of Asian Mycorrhizologists, and several publications of American Biographical Institute, USA and International Biographical Centre, UK. He is in the editorial board of a number of national/international journals and has been elected as Fellow of the International Society (FBS). Professor Sharma has attended/chaired technical sessions of several conferences in India and abroad and has also organized a few conferences/seminar/workshops during his stay with NEHU, Shillong and Assam University, Silchar. He is a life/active member of several professional bodies.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.C. Deorani
Dr. Suresh C. Deorani after obtaining Ph.D. degree in Physics from Allahabad University in 1972, joined the Indian Forest Services in 1975 and went on to became Principal Chief Conservator of Forests in 1999. He also served as Commissioner & Secretary, Department of Science & Technology, Information Technology and Horticulture, Govt. of Nagaland Kohima and Principal Secretary, Forests, Environment & Wildlife and Chairman, Pollution Control Board. He has also served as Secretary, Director (Research) and National Project Director ICFRE-World Bank Project at ICFRE, Dehra Dun, and authored a book Orchids of Nagaland in 1995. he is a member of the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Forestry and was a member, Editorial Board of Indian Forester. He has guided one Scientist for Ph.D. degree. Presently he is posted as principal Secretary, Department of Urban Development & Department of Higher Education and Chairman, State Urban Development Agency. Earlier, he had been Chairman, Nagaland Science & Technology Council also. He had opportunities to travel extensively in Nagaland durnign his tenure of over three decades in the state. He is a keen environmentalist and a silent observer of nature and its forces.
