The book Medicinal Plants of Uttarakhand: Diversity, Livelihood and Conservation is an attempt to synthesize diverse information on the medicinal plants. The book describes 964 medicinal plant species growing in various habitat types across the state from sub-tropical to alphine regions. More than 240 herbal formulations prepared by traditional Vaidyas for curing 73 types of ailments are also described in the book. The book portrays the number of challenges faced by different stakeholders, especially the growers and collectors and the available opportunities in developing the medicinal plants sector. The issues related to the medicinal plants such as ecological significance, cultural values, trade in tradition, cultivation of medicinal plants, role of institutions etc. are explained in the book.
The perception and preferences of local people towards cultivation and conservation of medicinal plants are also discussed in the book. Apart from this, several livelihood and conservation – oriented issues are also addressed in the present document. It also records some major agencies involved in funding projects on the medicinal plants research, cultivation and value addition. Based on this synthesis, the book suggests many possible remedies for various known problems in developing the herbal sector.
