Many books on Indian Music have been written before by eminent musicians, authors, connoisseurs and musicologists, some belonging to the hoary past and others to the more recent times and the present age. A few have dealt with the historic development and evolution of Ragas, Shruties and Scales in the two branches of Indian Music namely, Hindustani and Carnatic, while others have elaborated on the technical, aesthetic, physical and other aspects of each system. What reasons can there be, then, for the present writer to inflict yet another volume on the music world? The answer perhaps is in the following personal note which may enable the reader to appreciate the reasons.
