This micro study of the origin and activities of the so called “English East India Company†since the day it was incorporated in London in the year 1599 under the name of “The Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies†up to the time when it was transformed into what has come to be known in modern parlance as a Joint-stock Company in the year 1657, must be placed under the glare of what could be termed as the macroprobe of world history since medieval times. Although the formation of this Joint-Stock Company could by no means be considered as one of the milestones of history at this distance of time, it may be called historic, because India-a country of sub-continental dimensions-fell under the sway of a ‘Merchant Company’ incorporated in an island situated thousands of miles away! Historian of many different hues have come up with many different explanations for this stupefying historical development in modern times in consonance with their own predilections or get theories. As corporations in all their different manifestations have today growth so strong as to rule the world from behind the closed doors of their Board Rooms, it seems imperative for students to reinvent history in the light of the stampeding march of globalization. History repeats itself, some say. But it is for man not to repeat the mistakes of history!
