Since the day of inception in 1851, spanning a period of 150 years Geological Survey of India has been playing the most important role in collecting geoscientific data through systematic geological mapping, mineral prospecting and exploration for planned development of the country. Significant data and synthesized information are presented in the form of thematic maps and literature published by the Department from time to time for use of the public, industry and academia. The idea of compilation of the Mineral Atlas of India was conceived by late Dr. D.K. Ray, Former Director General, GSI and given Shape by Sri A. Ghosh, Ex. Dy. Director General, GSI. Efforts have been made in this single volume, to incorporate the most relevant data on minerals and present synthesized information against the backdrop of the geological setup. A synoptic "Mineral Map of India" on scale 1:5 million recently published by Geological Survey of India shows important mineral deposits only. In this Atlas, attempts have been made to give more detailed information on minerals, classifying them in respect of their character and nature and grouping them according to their use in an easily comprehensible and readable form. A List of the minerals present in individual deposits has also been provided as appendix to take the Atlas more informative and usable.
