The history of the twentieth century Mongolia beginning from 1911 until the democratic revolution of 1990 unfolds a series of events that led the Country to final break its economic and political dependence on the former Soviet Union. In 1990, the first free elections were held which witnessed the formation of a new parliament, followed by the adoption of a new Constitution in 1992, which changed the country’s name from Mongolian People’s republic to simply Mongolia. In a concise from the book highlights important landmarks in modern Mongolia and also examines the prevailing situation in the Mongol land in the period preceding the twentieth century. Revival of nationalism has been a new phenomenon in Mongolia, which was a direct result of the 1990 pro-democracy and nationalist movement, and therefore, this issue has also been dealt with in the context of re-emergence of Chinggis Khan as a national hero in the post-Soviet Mongolia. A brief scenario of changes in Mongolia’s domestic and foreign policy after collapse of the former Soviet union has also been presented, apart from highlighting the evolution of a new democratic civilian society and the overall political scenario in the country. While drawing attention to the revival of history, culture and religion the book throws fresh light on issues concerning the nomadic identity of Mongols in the twenty first century.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sharad K Soni
Dr. Sharad K Soni, Research Fellow at the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (Kolkata) holds his M.Phil and Ph.D degree from the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. For over 15 years now he has specialized in Mongolian Studies with particular focus on Mongolia's contemporary history and politics including foreign policy and its international relations. His research interests also include issues concerning Mongolia's two neighbouring areas, i.e., Tuva region of the Russian Federation (formerly known as Tannu Tuva) and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. Dr. Soni who is currently Visiting Faculty, School of International Studies, Peking University, Beijing (China), has published several books, monographs and research papers dealing with Mongolia's domestic and international issues as well as its relations with Russia, China and Central Asia. His Major publications include Mongolia-Russia Relations: Kiakhta to Vladivostak, (Delhi, 2002); Mongolia-China Relations in Historical Perspective, 1691-1911; Mongolia between Russia and China: Emerging Equation; Mongolia between China and Russia: An Historical Overview; Reign of Terror in Mongolia, 1920-1990 (New Delhi, 1992) (Co-author). A recipient of ASIA Fellows Award (2005), Dr. Soni has participated and presented papers in various national and international seminars/conferences both in India and abroad including United States, Europe, China and Mongolia. Besides, he has been associated with the Himalayan Research and Cultural Foundation (New Delhi), Since its very inception in 1997 as its Assistant Editor.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Tsedendambyn Batbayar
Dr. Tsedendambyn Batbayar, born in 1957, graduated from the School of oriental Studies, Leningrad State University (Russia). He was Director of the Institute of International and Oriental Studies, Mongolian Academy of sciences, Ulaanbaatar between 1990 and 1996. He has served as Director, Policy Planning and Coordination Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mongolia in 1998-2001. He was, also a fellow of Woodrow Wilson International center for Scholars (Washington, D.C.). His most recent assignment was the Counsellor to the Mongolian Embassy in Beijing, China. Dr. Batbayar wrote a number of books including Mongoli and japan in the First half of the Twentieth century (Ulannbaatar, 1998); Khalkbyn-Gol: History and today (Ulaanbaatar, 1989) and numerous articles published in Russia, Jpan, China, the united States, India and Korea.
