It is over 150 years since Malthus sounded his warning about an inevitable population explosion given the hitherto present trends. He was met with skepticism at best and ridicule at the worst. The general demographic condition of the world now and India in particular, has vindicated Malthus. The population explosion has frustrated government efforts to eradicate poverty and has reduced a great number of people to indigence. The Five-Year Plans of the Government of India have come to nothings. Given the above scenario, the author decided to do a small study of 300 Muslim women’s attitude towards family planning.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shakeel Ahmad

Dr. Shakeel Ahmad was born in Araria, a small town in North-East Bihar, India. After completion of his primary and secondary education locally, he was admitted to A.M.U. to study economics. It was during his under graduate course that he developed interest in the study of societies. The subjects he concentrated on were population density and its consequent causes and effects. As a sociologist, he saw the problem of population as embedded in Indian culture. His M.Phil thesis was entitled “Social Resistance to Family Planning among the Muslims,” The thrust of this study was that family planning programmes were thwarted by cultural factors. His focus was hence directed to the family planning policies of the Government of India. Close scrutiny of these policies showed that they were generally irrelevant, ill farmed and ineffectually applied. In the present book he has not stopped at criticism but has suggested several remedial measure to erstwhile population planning policies. It is hoped that these suggestions will be useful to subsequent researchers and policy makers. A previous book by the author entitled “Fertility Trend and Population Policy in India” is a useful background for what the present book is about. Currently Dr. Ahmad is researching Muslim Tribal Societies of Bihar, India and Somali, Kenya. He has been a participant in several seminars and conferences on demographic problems in several countries. Dr. Shakeel Ahmad is now a Senior lecturer in Sociology
