CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) is seriously engaged in technology development for the advancement of coastal placer mining in India and as a result a significant amount of R & D work has been taken up at various national and state level research laboratories and institutions. PLACER — 2005 (the National Seminar on Development Planning of Coastal Placer Minerals, organized by CSIR during Oct., 2005) attracted a galaxy of scientists and researchers from these institutions and a total of 27 research papers were presented, which are compiled (the complete text with illustrations) in this proceedings volume. Different sub-themes related to placer mineral research, covered by these papers, include: IT and Modelling; Exploration; Mining; Characterization and Processing; Value Addition; and Environmental Concerns. References for further reading are also available.
