Despite gains in the conservation of Nepal’s forests in recent years and the success of the community-owened forests, Nepal’s forests and the country’s environment still faced great challenges. These include the destruction of forests for fuelwood in the hills which leaves the cleared slopes vulnerable to erosion and landslides. In the Terai, the forests are likewise, still, under threat. More must be done to better manage the forests and environment of Nepal, both in the hills and in plains, and the rare and endangered species that are part of these ecosystem, must be protected.
Nepal is one of the most diverse countries of the world, in terms of topography and climate. This has given rise to a great variety of ecosystems and habitats. These ecosystems can be thrown out of balance, however, and certain remedial measures are needed. The people who live side by side with these natural resources must also be considered to be part of the solution.
