The rapid growth of the internet, and of the materials available online, offers great opportunity to make education more widely available and to enhance the learning experience of us all. The internet is bound to become an inseparable part of all the educational systems in the new millennium. In developed world it has already become an indispensable part without which the educational system can’t function. The net-based education system provides an integrated and distributed hypermedia information environment for the academic community. In this environment, instructors can construct course material and prepare some learning assistance for learners; learners can access course material and participate in online and off-line discussion using web browsers. The book is intended both as a broad review of ongoing and planned applications of the internet and tools in education, and as an analysis of key technical and educational issues-as well as broader social issues-that these applications highlight. We hope that this book will stimulate discussions regarding the costs and benefits of net technologies in teaching and learning, the varied models these technologies offer for providing education, and the changing relationships between traditional institutions of education and a new generation of providers.
