The book New Dynamics of Urban Sociology is a serious attempt to understand the forces and factors determining the parameters of urban sociology. The very first chapter introduces urban sociology. The next chapter deals with contemporary urban sociology.
Globalisation definitely is a major force of social change. The study of the relationship between urbanization and social change has been made in the third chapter. Issues and challenges for the urban family and challenges for sustainable urbanization have been discussed and analysed in the fourth and fifth chapter respectively. There exits a relationship among culture, politics and sexuality. The study of this crucial linkages has been made in the sixth chapter.
The study of urban poverty in India, gender perspective of urbanization and poverty and women workforce in urban India has been made in the seventh, eighth and ninth chapter respectively. The linkages among poverty, migration and urbanization have been examined in the tenth chapter. Globalisation as a process involves multiple economies and work cultures which has significant implication for urban landscape. The various challenges experienced by urban sociology has been covered in the final chapter.
The author has made an attempt to explore the approaches, methods and strategies for making the urban sociology more dynamic in the coming years. Despite all the challenges, the crucial fact remains that urbanization is a continuing process and more importantly, the growth of urbanization especially in the developing world is on the rise. The author is fully convinced that this work would be a significant contribution to the literature on urban sociology.
