If total human development is the ultimate goal of education, non-formal education can be built into the life and work of people in order that their diverse learning needs are fulfilled as and when required. Development implies a learning society in which every one voluntarily seeks and gains access to information, knowledge, skills and technologies that will enable them to attain sustainable development. The book contains nine chapters. The concept of development is analyzed by tracing its progressive undertaking, elaboration and application with corresponding charges effected in its interpretation and practice in India. In the context of development, philosophy, principles and the role of non-formal education is examined and the corresponding teaching – learning strategies and methods are elaborated in chapters that follow. Contributions of voluntary organisations for development of non-formal education are significant and therefore, their role is discussed.
