Childlessness is an issue which has not been given the attention it deserves. It is mostly seen as a medical problem, overlooking the personal, social and psychological aspects accompanying the issue. In the Indian context, where children are considered important from economic, social psychological and religious perspectives, not having a child have serious consequences for the couple and the family. The present work is an attempt to systematically delineate the specific effects of childlessness on affected couples and their families. Community’s perception for childlessness and medical facilities available for treatment of infertility have also been included in the study.
