India is a welfare state, committed to the welfare and development of its people specially vulnerable, sections. Malnutrition has been recognized as a serious problem among low income category of population of many developing countries in general and among scheduled caste population of India, in particular. Welfare and development of weaker section are possible only when they have good nutritional status. The present book is perhaps the first attempt dealing with dietary behaviour and nutritional status of scheduled cast in rural areas of Bihar. The nutritional problems have been diagnosed to find out the remedial measures for improving the nutritional status of scheduled caste. Several studies dealing with the problems of untouchability, Governmental and Non0Governmental programmes for welfare of scheduled caste and other kind of development etc. are available but the present book focuses attention on the life style of scheduled caste, their dietary behaviuor and nutritional status, assessment of diet and health status of the group for bringing about an improvement in the nutritional status of propulsion. The book presents dietary behaviour and nutritional status of all age groups of family members starting from infancy to old age with special emphasis on women and children. It has also dealt with socio-economic and psychological factor associated with nutritional status of scheduled caste. Formulation of an alternative strategy for improving the nutritional status of scheduled caste is another important feature of the book. Thus the present book may have immense utility for all those who are engaged in welfare and development of the weather section of society in India and abroad.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sunita Kumari

Dr. Sunity Kuamri, graduated from Rajendra Agricultural University (Bihar) and obtained Master Degree in Foods and Nutrition from Acharya N.G. Ranga Rao Agricultural University, Hyderabad. She earned Ph.D. Degree from B.B.A. Bihar University, Muzaffarpur. She is presently working in Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa where she teaches different courses of Foods and Nutrition. She has been actively engaged in teaching, research and extension activities of the university. She has a distinguished record of scholarship starting from school to post graduate level. She was awarded merit scholarship at school level, intermediate level and graduate level. She persued her M.Sc. studies on Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) junior fellowship.
