India is a major oil seeds producing country in the world. No other farm commodity can really meet simul-taneously in so large a measure the energy and protein requirements of human body as oilseeds do. Since oilseeds supply the major energy protein needs of the livestock population as well, they are the primary source of even such valuable animal fats and proteins as milks, meat, eggs. Apart from their use in human foods and animal foods, oilseeds also have a wide variety of industrial applications. Of late, oilseeds are finding their way in such diverse industrial uses as fatty acids, glycerin, chemicals apart from in paints, varnishes etc. Hence there is an urgent need and prominent focus on stepping up the production and productivity, streamlining the marketa-bility and profitability of oilseeds. This book is based on the findings of major research study conducted in a drought-prone region in the state of Andhra Pradesh. A comprehensive and intensive survey of the entire gamut of oilseeds economy in India–with special reference to area, production and yield has been made. A different feature of this book is it has made a region-specific evaluative study which helps gain clearer and deeper insight into the dynamics of oilseeds economy of India, especially intra-regional, category-wise and seed-wise increase in the growth and its impact on accelerating the pace of economic development.
