Painting in the Punjab Plains (1849-1949)

This is a pioneering contribution to the study of the work of significant artists working in the Punjab from 1849 to 1947. This important study identifies over 200 artists and traces the development of their work during a period which became a congruence of different, often conflicting influences and styles. The continuity of the Mughal style of miniature painting, the parallel growth of paintings in the various states of the Punjab hills, the impact of British artistic practices and the output of European visitors to the Punjab during this period are the major themes discussed in this volume.
