This book is a dispassionate attempt to study alliances and coalitions as they exist in the political system. It covers all important aspects of alliance politics in a comparative perspective – three federations India, Canada and Australia being the prime focus. The book provides a comprehensive classification of alliances on the basis of an objective criterion. The nature and functioning of alliances is examined in detail with a special emphasis on the factors which govern their formation, durability and disintegration. Impact of coalition politics on various political institutions particularly, the behavior of political parties is assessed critically.
