Human development is multi-dimensional and health is one of the most important components among them. ‘Health is wealth’ stands true as healthy population live longer, more productive and contributes more to economic development. Therefore, it is a focal point of priority stressed by government of most of the countries. Although health care system in India has been expanded considerably, yet health scenario, in terms of rural health infrastructure, quality, functioning, coverage, doctors-nurses per thousand populations, etc. is inadequate. In the North eastern region, there is major variation in health services across states, between urban and rural areas, in hilly terrains and so on. In this perspective, the present volume attempts to highlight the status and various dimensions of health. Taking a close look at the issues, the contributors discuss at length the performance of NRHM, utilization of antenatal care, health parameters of tribal’s and non-tribal’s, women reproductive health, spatial inequalities in access to health care, community participation for health, the role of mass media and in changing health care knowledge, women, child and reproductive health and suitability of drinking water and role of education in women health care with special focus on rural North East India.
