The ‘water challenge’ calls for a radical change in the way we interact with nature and a change in the manner in which we define progress and our needs – in the context of material progress. Carrying a range of papers, written by specialists from across the world, this volume examines afresh the water challenge through the hard lens of geology, hydrology, economics, and environmental science as well as the soft lens of social sciences, political science, and international relations. Beginning with the history of water-use practices in the Indus Basin, its evolution over time and its current status, the volume presents some of the micro and macro studies on water. Several papers here also highlight political, social and environmental conflicts over water.
