There is a vast literature on the Cambay Basin, which has been explored mainly by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), for nearly six decades. In recent years, a few other companies, such as Cairn Energy, Niko Resources, and Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation have also undertaken exploration and development activities in the basin. The geoscientists of the ONGC have published only a very limited amount of data, and most of their information lies unpublished in the archives of ONGC. Similarly, other oil companies have also not released information for publication. Between 1959 and 1975 the author, then an employee of ONGC, was assigned to work mostly in the Cambay Basin in various disciplines; he was actively associated in the discovery and development of several oil and gas fields in the northern Cambay Basin, and subsequently in the study of its subsurface stratigraphy and basin geology. Between 1975 and 1987, Deminex employed him as a subsurface geologist and geochemist in Iran and Egypt. Since 1987, he has been consulting to the oil industry in India. The subject of this book 'Petroleum Geology of the Cambay Basin, Gujarat, India' is vast, but the outline of the book and the scope of the subjects within it are seriously constrained by the lack of data in the public domain. Despite these limitations, the book attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of the petroleum geology of the basin. The book has been written for advanced students in the geosciences, for academics, and for those working in petroleum exploration and related fields. It is essentially a compilation of published work together with the author's personal knowledge gained over a period of sixteen years studying the basin. Since 1975, when the author left ONGC, a vast amount of exploration and research work has been carried out in the basin. To the results of this work, the author has had no access.
