Petroleum is a crucial resource for the economic development of any nation. India, after independence, made oil exploration a national subject. Since the discovery of oil in Gujarat in 1958, the exploration and production sector has grown enormously and has been highly productive. The recognizable jumps in the reserve accretion and oil production in India coincided with various stages of consolidation and upgradation of technologies and R&D infrastructure in the oil industry. Petrotech-95 has been organised at a critical juncture when the Indian economy, in tune with the global economy, is undergoing major transformations and the petroleum industry the world over, is formulating strategies to enhance exploration with exploitation efficiency and to find new technologies to minimize risk and ensure higher levels of cost effectiveness. The deliberations, discussions and technological exchanges in the conference were planned within the relevant policy frames in respect of oil sector and within various domains of expertise and specialization, focusing on critical concerns.
