This book is based on the extensive fieldwork conducted through out Karnataka. The study focuses on undertaking and analyzing the occurrence of Possession Phenomenon in our country and is based on the collection of information through personal interview with the possession cases and their family members, observations of the behaviour and practices in the healing centres, etc. In this study both the types Possession-Voluntary and Involuntary have been intensively studies. The study was based on the Diagnostic-Descriptive Research Design Respondents were selected who fulfilled selection criteria by visiting Traditional Healers Shrines, and Faith healers who are popular in different parts as palces/persons, and claim to be dealing with this phenomenon effectively. The author has made sincere attempt to give scientific answer to the questions like-Why? When? Who? And How? This phenomenon/behaviour is manifested in our society. This book tries to clarify many misconceptions, which exists about this phenomenon. Further if throws light upon the limitation, which exist in the present health services and strongly recommend the need for providing holistic and integrated social and health services to overcome the manifestation of this phenomenon, which is in reality a preventable manifestation. The book is likely to help the professional social workers, psychologists, psychiatratists, medical practioners and in general a common man/woman through practical findings and reader are requested to send their comments also.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.R. Patil

S.R. Patil born and brought up in Mysore, princely city of Karnataka state, had her education in different places of Karnataka as her father was an engineer in PWD of Karnataka Government. After graduation she did her M.A. in Social Work from Karnataka University, Dharwad. Later completed two year Postgraduate Diploma in Psychiatric Social work from National Institue of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore in the Year 1979. In 1980 she joined P.G Deptt. of studies in Social Work, K.U. Dharwad as a Lecturer and obtained her Ph.D. in Social work. In August 1993, she was promoted as Reader under the Career Advancement Scheme in the same department. Since Jan. 2004 she has been Chairperson, DOS in social Work Besides more than 10 students are supervised by her in the fieldwork placement in each academic year. As a faculty of the department she has been teaching various basic as well as specialization papers to the students of all the four semesters. Over two dozen of students have been guided for dissertation work. One student has obtained Ph.D. under her guidance. At present 5 students are pursuing Ph.D. under her guidance. Besides this, she has attended more than two-dozen of national level conferences organized by various professional bodies in India and has attended international conferences at Singapore in 1992, at Toulouse France in 1994, and at Mumbai in December 2003 and 2nd Jan. 2004. Undertook Two Research Projects sponsored by K.U.D. and U.G.C. in the year 1997-98 and 2001-2004, respectively and Completed the research and submitted the reports to respective funding agencies as per schedule. Besides seven research articles have been published in the local, national and international journals and books over the years.
