The National Seminar on Philosophy and Science of Value Education in Today’s Context, held here on 21-22 January 2005, created great interest among scholars of several disciplines. The notion of value is basically western and the examination of this concept is a recent phenomenon in India. Simply speaking, value stands for the worth of a thing or action or disposition, while valuation stands for the estimation. The realm of values is ordinarily distinguished from that of facts. But philosophers, theologians, psychologists, economists and other specialists have given connotations so very different from one another that a new researcher in the field find sit somehow bewildering. Some feel that the highly-used and misused word value should give way to a one precisely-defined word. But at the same time, many issues involved in various definitions are so important that they cannot be washed away. The Country today is in the midst of a momentous transition. Advancement in the material sphere-aided by science and technology has been remarkable. There is however, an asymmetry between material progress and human moral capacity to sustain the same. This is written large in every major sector of human activity. The theory and practice of Value Education can be of great relevance in analyzing the present predicament. At the same time, it calls for a fresh look into the academic and other means of value transmission and value generation.
