Plants of Indian Botanic Garden

This publication on "Plants of the Indian Botanic Garden, Howrah" is indeed an inclusive and colourful work on floral inventory of this renowned garden. Indian Botanic Garden (Erstwhile East India Company Garden or Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta), established by Lieutenant Colonel Robert Kyd and spread in ca 273 acres, celebrated its bicentenary in 1987 under the auspices of the Botanical Survey of India. The garden has been playing very important role as a repository for native and exotic plants. It has over 12000 shrubs and trees recognized in 1400 species together with numerous herbs. They are distributed in 25 distinct divisions. The garden maintains rich germplasm collection of selected species and also in prized possession of conservatories, glass houses and green houses. Exclusive assemblage of medicinal plants is grown in 'Charak Udyan' of the garden. The garden has been a center for botanical and horticultural research with orientation in conservation and multiplication of rare and endangered species. It is in reality a live model for imparting conservation and environmental education and awareness in nature conservation among people. The authors have listed 2132 taxa and profusely illustrated with more than 1500 photographs to complement in easy recognition of most species/varieties. This book will be of immense use not only to all plant lovers and the more curious teachers and students of botany but also to those who frequent the garden.
